How Do I Use a Pendulum?

A Simple Guide for Beginners

If you have never used a pendulum before, it can seem a little mysterious.

You might watch someone using one and wonder whether they are moving it themselves, whether it is picking up energy, or whether something else is happening.

You do not need to understand everything before you begin.

A pendulum is simply a small weighted object hanging from a chain or cord. It may be made from crystal, metal, wood, or another material.

People often use pendulums for yes and no questions, energy checking, chakra work, and developing their intuition.

The easiest way to learn is to keep it simple.

How Does a Pendulum Work?

There are different beliefs about how pendulums work.

Some people believe a pendulum connects with their intuition or higher self. Others believe it responds to subtle energy.

There is also the idea that tiny movements in your hand cause the pendulum to move without you consciously realising it.

You do not have to decide exactly what you believe before using one.

A pendulum can still help you slow down, focus on a question, and notice what you may already be feeling beneath the noise.

It is best used as a support tool. It should not replace common sense, professional advice, or your own ability to make decisions.

Choosing Your First Pendulum

There is no perfect pendulum for beginners.

You might feel drawn to a certain crystal, colour, shape, or weight. You may simply choose one that feels comfortable when you hold it.

Clear quartz is often chosen as a good all-round pendulum. Amethyst is commonly used for intuition and spiritual work. Rose quartz can feel softer and may suit emotional or heart-focused questions.

Metal pendulums are also popular because they usually have a steady weight and clear movement.

The material is less important than how it feels to you.

Choose one that is comfortable to hold and has enough chain to move freely.

How Do I Hold a Pendulum?Holding a Pendulum

Hold the end of the chain gently between your thumb and finger.

Allow the pendulum to hang naturally.

Try to keep your hand relaxed. You do not need to hold it perfectly still. Trying too hard to stop every movement can make your hand tense.

You can rest your elbow on a table if that feels easier.

Take a slow breath and allow the pendulum to settle.

Before asking anything, spend a moment simply holding it. Notice its weight and movement.

There is no need to rush.

Finding Your Yes and No

Before asking questions, you need to learn how your pendulum shows you yes and no.

Hold the pendulum and say:

“Please show me yes.”

Wait and watch the movement.

It may swing forwards and backwards. It may move from side to side. It may move in a circle.

Allow it to settle, then say:

“Please show me no.”

Again, wait and watch.

You can also ask:

“Please show me unsure.”

Your movements may be different from someone else’s. That is normal.

Do not assume clockwise always means yes or side to side always means no. Let your own pendulum show you.

Start With Questions You Already Know

When you are learning, begin with simple questions that already have a clear answer.

You could ask:

“Is my name Sarah?”

“Am I sitting down?”

“Am I indoors?”

“Do I live in Australia?”

Ask a mixture of true and false questions.

This helps you become familiar with the movement without placing too much pressure on the answer.

It also helps you notice whether your expectations are affecting the pendulum.

Ask Clear Questions

Pendulums usually work best with questions that can be answered with yes or no.

Try not to ask questions that are too broad.

Instead of asking:

“Will everything work out?”

You could ask:

“Would it support me to focus on this today?”

Ask about one thing at a time.

Instead of asking:

“Should I buy this crystal and use it for sleep?”

Separate it into two questions:

“Would this crystal be supportive for me?”

“Would this crystal be suitable for my sleep space?”

Clear questions usually lead to clearer answers.

Begin With Small Decisions

When you first begin, keep your questions simple and low-pressure.

You might ask:

“Would grounding support me today?”

“Would journalling help me work through this feeling?”

“Would this crystal suit my meditation space?”

“Do I need to rest before making this decision?”

Avoid using a pendulum to make major medical, financial, legal, or relationship decisions.

A pendulum should not take control of your life.

The goal is to help you pause, listen, and become more aware of what you are already feeling.

Your Mood Can Affect the Answer

It can be difficult to get a clear response when you feel anxious, emotional, tired, or desperate for a certain answer.

If you strongly want the pendulum to say yes, you may unintentionally influence the movement.

This does not mean you are doing anything wrong.

If you feel too attached to the answer, stop for a moment.

Take a breath.

You can always put the pendulum down and return to the question later.

It is also best not to ask the same question repeatedly because you do not like the first answer. This usually creates more confusion.

Do I Need to Cleanse My Pendulum?

Some people like to cleanse or reset their pendulum before using it, especially if it is new or has been handled by other people.

You could place it near selenite, use sound, pass it through smoke, or hold it while setting a simple intention.

Be careful with water because some crystals and metals can be damaged by it.

You do not need a long ritual.

You could simply say:

“I clear this pendulum and prepare it for calm, clear, and honest guidance.”

Keep Your First Sessions Short

You do not need to spend a long time using your pendulum.

Five or ten minutes is enough when you are beginning.

Ask a few simple questions and then stop.

You may also find it helpful to write down your questions and answers.

Over time, you may notice when your readings feel clearer and when your emotions begin influencing them.

Trust Takes Time

Using a pendulum is a skill.

You might feel comfortable with it immediately, or you may question every movement.

Both are normal.

You do not need to force yourself to believe anything.

Stay curious. Practise with simple questions. Pay attention to how you feel while using it.

A pendulum will not make every decision for you.

It can help you slow down, listen, and reconnect with what you may already know inside.
